Business model innovation: future-proof business models that start from what truly drives your customer.

Business model innovation rarely fails due to a lack of ideas. It fails because it starts with the wrong question. June20 builds new business models grounded in the emotional reality of your customer. Within our methodology, this forms the structural foundation for the new value propositions we co-develop with our clients.

“Your customer doesn’t buy your business model. They buy solutions that feel right for their problems. That’s where we start.”

Bart De Leeuw - Business Innovation lead, JUNE20

What is business model innovation?

Business model innovation is the redesign of how your company creates, delivers and captures value. It goes beyond a new product. It touches who you serve, what you offer, how you earn money and which channels you use. At June20, we see your business model as the logic behind every customer choice. Does that logic no longer match what people feel and expect? Then even a strong product starts to struggle. That’s why we build every new business model on deep customer insights. We translate what moves people into concrete choices: which segment, which value proposition, which revenue model, which channels. That’s how business model innovation becomes a deliberate, strategic choice.

Why your business model is under pressure today

Customer behaviour, technology and culture are shifting at the same time. A model that drove growth for years can quietly lose its grip. Often the first signals don’t show up in your sales figures. They show up in 1-star reviews, forum threads and small niche segments that grow fast. Disruptive innovation rarely arrives with a warning. It starts where your customers already feel friction that your current model ignores. Future-proofing your business means spotting those signals early and acting before the market forces you to. Sometimes a sharper proposition is enough. Sometimes it calls for a full business model transformation. We help you detect those early signals, make the right choice and see where to start

Our approach: innovating from the emotional reality of your customer

Most innovation programmes start with “what can we make?” and only invite the customer at the end to validate. We turn that logic around. Our Engineering Emotions methodology starts from what your customer really feels, fears and wants. We then use that reality as the structure for new business models. The approach runs in 4 phases: understand, from insight to design, select and implement.

Customer insight: what really drives your customer?

We start with a broad customer needs analysis across 7 domains, from your business context to your operational reality. Then we go deeper than what customers say. We map 3 layers: what your customer wants to achieve, how they want to feel and how they want to be seen. We also read the cultural signals in your market and separate dominant signals from emerging ones. That’s where the room for customer-centric innovation sits. We bring it all together in tension cards: sharp statements that show where your current model and your customer’s reality pull apart.

Developing new propositions and services

With the tension cards on the table, we co-create with your leadership team. We use the Business Model Canvas to explore “what if” questions on every building block. What if we changed the value proposition? The customer relationship? The key resources? This value proposition design keeps your team from settling on the most obvious idea. It opens the door to product innovation and service innovation that change more than the surface. We then sharpen every idea in 3 sentences from your customer’s point of view. If an idea doesn’t fit in 3 sentences, it isn’t ready yet.

A revenue model that holds up

A strong proposition needs a revenue model that supports it. We test how every new idea affects the way you earn money. Does it shift one-off sales to recurring income? Does it open new revenue streams, or does it eat into the ones you have? We map the critical assumptions behind each concept and validate the riskiest ones outside the workshop room. So you decide based on evidence.

From idea to innovation strategy

We stress-test the strongest concepts with a pre-mortem and a sceptical customer challenge. Then your leadership team selects the direction and assigns clear ownership. That decision becomes your innovation strategy: a phased roadmap with milestones, owners and timing. We stay on board during implementation, with an internal and external story that helps teams, customers and partners understand the change. Curious how ready your organisation is for innovation? Business model canvas: a tool, not a strategy

The business model canvas is a 1-page overview of the 9 building blocks of your business model, from customer segments to cost structure. The value proposition canvas zooms in on 1 of those blocks: how your offer matches your customer’s jobs, pains and gains. Both are useful tools. We use them in every project to structure ideas and to see how a change in 1 block affects the others. A filled-in canvas is still a snapshot, though.

External growth needs internal strength

A new business model only lands when your organisation can carry it. Your processes, your tools and your people all need to move with it. Employees who worked in the old model need a new story about who they are and what they do. That’s why we connect customer-driven innovation with internal innovation: smarter processes, AI where it adds measurable value and teams who own the change.

Why choose June20 as your innovation partner

You don’t need another innovation consultant who leaves you with a report. You need a partner who sits at the table with you. At June20, a facilitator, a strategist and a creative join your workshops for the full day, so ideas take shape on the spot. We bring a network of experts with knowledge of your sector. And we stay until the new model works in practice. That makes innovation management part of your daily business, whether you’re a growing SME or running corporate innovation in a large organisation.

Engineering Emotions: heart and head

Engineering Emotions is exactly what the name says. Engineering, because we systematically translate emotional insights into concrete business choices. Emotions, because those choices only last when they’re grounded in what moves people at the moment they decide. That’s how we combine heart and head.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between business model innovation and product innovation?

Product innovation improves or renews what you sell. Business model innovation changes how you do business around it: for whom, through which channels and how you earn money. A new product often fits your existing model. A new business model usually changes several building blocks at once.

When is it time to review your business model?

It’s time when your customers’ expectations shift faster than your offer. Watch for early signals: rising price pressure, new players winning over a specific segment or customers who stay out of habit rather than conviction. Reviewing your model before the numbers drop gives you room to choose.

What is the difference between innovation strategy and innovation management?

Innovation strategy decides where you will innovate and why: which customers, which opportunities, which business model. Innovation management is how you organise and steer that work every day, with ownership, milestones and budgets. You need both, and we help you connect them.

How long does a business model innovation project take?

A business model innovation project typically takes a few weeks to reach a decision with a mandate. Indicatively, we plan 2 to 4 weeks to understand, 1 to 2 weeks from insight to design and 2 weeks to select. Implementation then runs as long as your roadmap needs.

Do you also work for SMEs or only for large companies?

We work for both. Our approach scales with the size of your organisation and the depth of the change you’re after.
